The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) is a professional body which was founded in 1919 and has its headquarters in London – United Kingdom. It operates in over forty (40) countries across the world and has more than 35,000 active individual members worldwide and over 4,000 students every year take up CILT international qualifications.

CILT is the largest and most popular supply chain, logistics and transport institute in the world. It is the leading professional body in the world covering logistics, transport, and integrated management of supply chains. It covers professional development, training and qualification, consultancy, policy, industry best practices, research, public and private sector collaboration and facilitation. This professional body grants individuals and organizations access to the tools, knowledge and connections vital to succeed in the logistics and transport industry.

CILT is available at ZCAS in Full-time, Evening and Online modes of study. There are three levels required for a candidate to complete the CILT qualification, and these are:

  • International Introductory Certificate
  • International Diploma
  • Advanced Diploma

Programme Structure

International Introductory Certificate

This the foundation level of the CILT qualification. This is a professional qualification requiring 160 guided learning hours. To complete this level, leaners must study and pass two mandatory modules and two optional modules. Optional modules allow leaners to specialize in different areas of logistics and transport and choose units that suit themselves and their employer. The students will benefit from a comprehensive understanding and overview of key areas in logistics and transport. It is and excellent introductory qualification for new entrants to the logistics and transport sector. All examinations must be completed within two years of initial enrolment. This comprises the following modules:

  • ML-L3 | Business Theory
  • M2-L3 | Business Application
  • O3-L3 | Passenger Transport Operations
  • O5-L3 | Freight Transport Operations

Students should take note that they have to sit for 4 subjects/modules (two mandatory under code M and two optional under code O) at certificate level. Therefore, candidates have to write two modules marked M and choose any two-modules marker O.

Entry Requirements

  • At least 16 years of age
  • Grade twelve (12) certificate with five (5) credits including Mathematics and English or equivalent
  • Completion of a level or equivalent gives entry to the next higher level

International Diploma

This level builds on the knowledge gained from studying the certificate level, although students with some experience may wish to begin their studies at this level. This level is of benefit to those in middle management positions who seek to develop a more strategic view of logistics and transport operations. It will give them the capability to review and modify operational activities. Students also gain an understanding of key areas from an international viewpoint.

This diploma is a modular course comprising 15 units arranged as ‘Mandatory’, ‘Elective’ and ‘Optional’. Students should take note that they must pass four modules to obtain a Professional Diploma. The mandatory module is a compulsory, and three other units from the ‘Electives’ and ‘Optional’ Modules should be taken.

  • PD01 – Management in Logistics & Transport

Elective Module

  • PD02 – Supply Chain
  • PD03 – Transport Operation

Elective Module

  • PD06 – Movement of Goods
  • PD07 – Movement of People
  • PD12 – Transport and Society

Students should take note that they must pass four modules to obtain a Professional Diploma. The mandatory module is compulsory, and they have to take three other subjects from ‘Elective’ and ‘Optional’ modules.

Entry Requirements

It is recommended thought not a strict necessity that those individuals wishing to undertake the CILT International Diploma are involved with:

  • Contributing to the establishment of activity plans to support logistics operations and/or
  • Supervising/managing and controlling operational activities.

For entry to the International Diploma candidates are expected to have prior knowledge of logistics and transport operations and an awareness of the integrated nature of supply chain activities, ideally through their own work experience and/or knowledge gained from studying International Introductory Certificate level.

International Advanced Diploma

This qualification aims to give senior mangers and leaders strategic management and decision-making skills to enable them to aspire to highest levels of management. Students are expected to become familiar with analytical concepts and to use them in their management role. They will be aware of ethical issues, sustainability, and global environment issues. Students will develop skills and research methodology and importantly must produce a work based project.

There are four (4) core units which all students must complete. Students who undertake the International Advanced Diploma should be aware that this involves two (2) years of part-time study which includes a quality dissertation which has to be completed on a work-based project. The focus of this course is on strategic logistics and transportation management. Issues in this area will be explored in depth and at a relatively advanced level. The student is expected to fully understand concepts and ideas around strategy and demonstrate competence in applying strategic thinking. Successful completion of the International Advanced Diploma, together with a minimum of four (4) years appropriate experience, meets the eligibility criteria for membership upgrade to Chartered Member (CMILT) of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport.

  • ADPI/01 – Strategic Context
  • ADPI/02 – Leadership and Strategic Management
  • ADPI/03 – Strategic Network Planning
  • ADPI/04 – Delivering Strategic Performance
  • ADPI/05 – Research Methodologies & Work-based Project

Entry Requirements

To study this course, a candidate is expected to have completed the diploma course in full. Successful completion of the International Advanced Diploma, together with a minimum of four years appropriate experience, meets the eligibility criteria for membership upgrade to Chartered Member (CMILT) of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport.
